Shawn Levy, TIFF, and Our Lady Peace Honored in Diverse Canada’s Walk of Fame Induction

Montreal-born filmmaker Shawn Levy, known for Stranger Things and the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame on Saturday, calling the honour a reflection of how his Canadian identity continues to shape his work.

Speaking at the Toronto gala, Levy emphasized that Canada’s humility and civility are ingrained in his creative journey, which has included major projects like Night at the Museum filmed on Canadian soil. He joins over 230 Canadians recognized in Toronto’s entertainment district.

Eight others were also honoured, including the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which marks its 50th anniversary this year. TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey highlighted upcoming Canadian content, such as Ryan Reynolds’ documentary on John Candy, set for the September festival.

Iconic rock band Our Lady Peace was also inducted, celebrating 30 years in music with over 360 million streams and five No. 1 singles. Frontman Raine Maida recalled the patriotic energy of a recent tour stop in Edmonton, where the audience spontaneously sang “O Canada” after a Connor McDavid goal.

Other inductees include actress Tonya Williams, guitarist Liona Boyd, golfer Mike Weir, cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Tirone David, War Child Canada founder Dr. Samantha Nutt, and hotelier Isadore Sharp.

Williams, celebrated for her role in The Young and the Restless and as the founder of Reelworld Screen Institute, hopes her induction will inspire young racialized filmmakers to pursue their vision seriously.

Walk of Fame CEO Jeffrey Latimer noted the diverse excellence of this year’s class: “We have such unique voices from such unique people. The connective tissue is that they’re all the best at what they do.”

A televised version of the induction ceremony will air July 1 at 7 p.m. on CBC and CBC Gem.
