A nearly 10-hour armed standoff in Winnipeg’s Point Douglas neighbourhood ended peacefully Saturday afternoon, with police taking a man into custody and restoring traffic flow on the Disraeli Bridge.
Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Const. Dani McKinnon confirmed that the standoff, which began around 5:30 a.m. after reports of gunshots near Grove Street and Euclid Avenue, involved a man known to police who later moved to the Disraeli Bridge area. The bridge was immediately shut down, along with surrounding roads, as tactical units and emergency responders secured the area.
Despite the heavy police presence—including a tactical armoured vehicle and more than a dozen police units—no injuries were reported. The suspect was taken into custody by around 3:30 p.m., when police declared the situation resolved and confirmed that the public was no longer at risk.
McKinnon described the incident as one of the service’s lengthier negotiations but called it a “great success” for the community, law enforcement, and the individual involved. The Disraeli pedestrian walkway and vehicular lanes reopened Saturday afternoon, though the Sutherland off-ramps remained closed pending further clearance.
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances that led to the standoff. More information is expected in the coming days.
