A United Airlines flight en route from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) was forced to make an emergency landing at Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) on Monday, June 11, 2025, due to a medical emergency onboard.
Flight UA989, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER registered as N2136U, departed Washington at 22:07 UTC. Roughly two and a half hours into the flight, a flight attendant alerted the crew to a passenger’s medical emergency, prompting the diversion to Halifax.
While passengers initially anticipated a brief 30-minute delay, the aircraft remained on the tarmac in Halifax for over seven hours. Complaints mounted over the lack of communication, the inability to deplane, and operational confusion.
Post-landing, the crew encountered fuel imbalance issues following refueling, requiring further adjustments. As delays dragged on, concerns escalated over crew duty limits, eventually forcing United Airlines to cancel the flight.
The 8.3-year-old Boeing 777-300ER never resumed its route to Frankfurt, leaving passengers frustrated and stranded.
