Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has slammed both Republican and Democratic leaders for decades of failed immigration reform, calling their inaction the root cause of the current unrest in Los Angeles. His remarks came during a promotional event for his Netflix show Fubar, where he addressed President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops and Marines to L.A. in response to protests against immigration raids.
“This is the result of Democrats and Republicans not being able to come together in this immigration reform,” Schwarzenegger told Variety. “That’s what needs to be done so that you don’t have to go and start arresting people in the first place.”
Schwarzenegger, a high-profile Republican who served as California’s governor from 2003 to 2011, criticized the political establishment for ignoring the immigration issue to preserve partisan leverage. “They’re all political hacks, party hacks, rather than public servants,” he said, lamenting that U.S. authorities “don’t even know who is in here.”
Tensions in Los Angeles escalated after ICE raids targeting undocumented immigrants sparked mass demonstrations. Despite opposition from California Governor Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, Trump pushed forward with military deployment, asserting federal authority in what he described as a national security emergency.
Schwarzenegger’s Fubar co-star Gabriel Luna echoed the sentiment, arguing ICE resources are misallocated. “The 15 guys waiting to get a job at 5 a.m. at the Home Depot parking lot are not the ones we need to be worrying about,” Luna said, adding that enforcement efforts are targeting the wrong population.
The incident has reignited debate over immigration policy and federal overreach, with Schwarzenegger’s remarks adding bipartisan pressure on lawmakers to finally address comprehensive reform.
