United Airlines has officially inaugurated its new transatlantic route from Newark Liberty International Airport to Funchal Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira Airport (FNC), expanding its footprint in Europe with a narrowbody aircraft—the Boeing 737 MAX 8. This marks the airline’s latest effort to connect travelers with lesser-known yet desirable summer destinations using efficient, lower-capacity aircraft.
The Funchal route will operate three times weekly—on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays—until September 24, 2025. Departures from Newark are scheduled at 20:55, arriving in Madeira at 08:45 the following morning. Return flights leave Funchal at 11:30 and land in Newark by 14:00.
United is leveraging the growing demand for unique transatlantic experiences, positioning itself to serve niche markets more cost-effectively. The airline now operates three transatlantic routes using the Boeing 737, including services to Ponta Delgada, Portugal and Nuuk, Greenland.
Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, stated, “Our network provides the most choice and variety for our customers, whether they are looking for a relaxing seaside getaway, once-in-a-lifetime adventure travel or to explore some of the most vibrant urban escapes across the globe.”
As long-haul narrowbody operations become more widespread, United’s route to Madeira exemplifies the shift toward more agile and targeted international travel strategies.
