Trump Imposes Sweeping New Travel Ban on 19 Countries Amid Security Concerns

President Trump has signed a sweeping proclamation barring travelers and immigrants from 12 countries and imposing partial restrictions on seven more, citing national security threats and insufficient foreign vetting processes. The full ban affects nationals from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. These restrictions target both permanent immigrants and temporary visa holders.

Partial suspensions apply to Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, impacting those with immigrant visas and some nonimmigrant categories. The ban becomes effective at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, June 9.

According to the White House, these measures are tailored to countries that fail to meet U.S. security standards, including visa overstay issues and lack of information sharing. Exemptions exist for U.S. permanent residents, close family of citizens, certain Afghans with special visas, diplomats, and dual nationals.

The policy follows a recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, by an Egyptian visa overstayer, prompting a review of Egypt’s vetting procedures. While Egypt isn’t on the list, Trump noted the situation exemplifies the need for tougher controls.

The new restrictions mirror those enacted in Trump’s first term, many of which were legally contested. A version of the earlier ban was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. The Biden administration later repealed those measures, but Trump’s latest move signals a renewed emphasis on entry restrictions based on national security assessments.
