Winnipeg Councillor Urges Mayor to Rescind Award Amid Controversial Video Linked to Local Businessman

Winnipeg police are investigating a video circulating online related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has prompted city councillor Sherri Rollins to call on Mayor Scott Gillingham to rescind a civic award given to Ramsey Zeid, co-owner of Food Fare grocery stores and president of the Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba (CPAM).

Zeid received the Mayor’s Business Improvement Zone Award on May 15 for his store’s community involvement. However, Rollins highlighted a video reposted by CPAM on Instagram featuring a masked figure in a Palestinian keffiyeh calling for non-peaceful actions globally to “move the needle” and “destroy the status quo.” The video labels Israel a “terrorist foreign entity” and uses terms like “demonic Zionists,” calling for coordinated disruption worldwide.

Rollins condemned the video as “thinly veiled calls to violence” and urged the mayor to take responsibility for the award. Mayor Gillingham responded that the award was presented to the business, not Zeid personally, and noted that the nomination was submitted by the West Broadway Biz board, on which Rollins sits.

Zeid said he is seeking legal advice and expressed honor over the award, stating his efforts to help those affected by poverty in Winnipeg.

The video has been forwarded to police, who confirmed an investigation into the violent incitement claims is underway. Mayor Gillingham emphasized zero tolerance for antisemitism or Islamophobia in Winnipeg.
