OpenAI announced on Monday that it will establish its first office in Seoul and has formed an entity in South Korea to meet the growing demand for its ChatGPT service. South Korea ranks as the country with the second-largest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers after the United States.
The company has started recruiting staff to support local partnerships and plans to reveal more details in the coming months. OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon highlighted Korea’s comprehensive AI ecosystem, spanning from hardware to software and covering all age groups, as a key factor in the country’s potential for AI innovation.
Earlier this year, OpenAI partnered with South Korean chat app operator Kakao to develop AI products tailored for the market. Kwon, currently visiting Seoul, is scheduled to meet with officials from both the main opposition Democratic Party and the ruling People Power Party, according to local media.
