Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) will convene an expert conference on May 30 in Tokyo to address ongoing challenges in the domestic airline industry. The meeting will gather seven academic experts to discuss issues including shifts in demand and macroeconomic pressures affecting the sector.
MLIT highlighted that stability in the domestic aviation environment is increasingly difficult due to pandemic-driven changes in travel demand and rising costs denominated in foreign currencies, such as maintenance and fuel expenses. The ministry warned these pressures could negatively impact Japan’s domestic aviation network, which plays a critical role in regional connectivity, local livelihoods, and attracting inbound tourists.
The council aims to propose measures to ensure the sector’s stability and future growth. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways reported solid domestic traffic and revenue growth for the fiscal year ending March 31, aided by improved revenue management. However, Skymark Airlines faced a decline in operating profit despite increased passenger revenue, primarily due to cost surges and foreign exchange losses.
