An increasing number of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are turning to yoga, finding harmony between its physical discipline and their own spiritual practices. What was once viewed with caution by some within the faith is now emerging as a popular tool for improving physical health, mental clarity, and even enhancing spiritual mindfulness.

Across the United States, particularly in regions with large Latter-day Saint populations such as Utah and Idaho, yoga studios are welcoming church members who are integrating the ancient practice into their daily lives. Many say that yoga complements their religious values by promoting inner peace, personal discipline, and holistic wellness.

For some Latter-day Saints, yoga offers more than just exercise. It’s a way to disconnect from the noise of modern life and reconnect with spiritual intentions. Breathing exercises, meditation, and quiet reflection are helping individuals manage stress, strengthen their faith, and improve their relationship with both body and spirit.

“Yoga helps me feel grounded and closer to God,” said Rachel Harmon, a Latter-day Saint from Salt Lake City who has been practicing yoga for over five years. “It doesn’t conflict with my beliefs—it enhances them by helping me slow down and listen.”

While yoga’s spiritual roots originate in Hinduism, many practitioners within the Latter-day Saint community focus on its secular and physical aspects. Others adapt the meditative elements in ways that align with Christian teachings, often using the time to pray, reflect on scripture, or find personal inspiration.

Church leaders have generally taken a neutral stance on yoga, allowing members the freedom to explore health and wellness practices as long as they align with gospel principles. As a result, interest in yoga continues to grow, especially among younger members and women seeking a more mindful approach to fitness.

Health professionals within the community are also advocating for yoga’s benefits. Studies have shown that regular practice can improve flexibility, reduce anxiety, and lower blood pressure—all outcomes that support the Church’s health-focused Word of Wisdom doctrine.

In some wards and community centers, informal yoga groups are forming where members come together in faith-based settings to practice. These gatherings often begin or end with a prayer or a short devotional, blending physical activity with spiritual reflection.

As more Latter-day Saints discover yoga’s benefits, the once-perceived boundary between Eastern practice and Western faith is fading. For many, yoga has become a meaningful part of a balanced, faith-centered lifestyle.
