Australia Floods Leave Tens of Thousands Isolated as Helicopters Deliver Emergency Feed to Stranded Livestock

Severe flooding in Australia’s southeast has killed five people and isolated tens of thousands, with helicopters airdropping animal feed on Sunday to farmers trapped by rising waters.

The mid-north coast of New South Wales is recovering after days of relentless rain caused widespread flooding, damaging an estimated 10,000 properties. Floodwaters destroyed homes, swept away livestock, and submerged roads, leaving about 32,000 residents cut off as waters slowly recede.

Dan Patch, a local farmer near Taree, described the floods as the worst seen in the region, with some cattle going without food for days. The New South Wales government has responded with emergency fodder, veterinary care, and aerial support, completing 43 helicopter drops and around 130 additional feed deliveries to isolated farms.

At the flood’s peak, around 50,000 people were trapped by submerged streets and fast-rising rivers. The latest flood-related death involved an elderly man found near Taree along the Manning River.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that conditions remain critical as cleanup begins. Experts link the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events, following recent droughts and bushfires, to climate change impacts.
