China’s Tea Trade with Nigeria Flourishes, Strengthening Bilateral Relations

China’s tea trade with Nigeria is flourishing, significantly boosting economic and cultural ties between the two countries. Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, highlighted this progress during the “2025 Tea for Harmony Yaji Cultural Salon” in Abuja, themed “Tea in Nature’s Whisper: Aroma of Picturesque Jiangnan.”

Ambassador Yu noted the recent introduction of Hainan Baisha tea to Nigeria’s market in 2024 as a milestone in Sino-Nigerian tea cooperation. He described tea as a “green envoy” that not only nurtures the body but also fosters economic, trade, and cultural exchanges across thousands of miles.

From the bustling tea stalls of Lagos to the mint tea traditions in Kano, tea serves as a vital social bond in Nigeria, reflecting shared values of harmony and friendship. Yu emphasized that the Chinese tea ceremony, steeped in over five millennia of philosophical wisdom, aligns closely with Nigerian cultural principles, symbolizing a spiritual bridge between the two civilizations.
