Miami International Airport Approves $600 Million Expansion with New Concourse K

Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners has approved the construction of New Concourse K at Miami International Airport (MIA), a key component of the airport’s $9 billion Future-Ready Modernization in Action plan. This $600.6 million project will add six new gates, a ground support equipment maintenance facility, upgraded baggage handling systems, and essential airfield infrastructure improvements to support growing passenger demand.

The expansion aims to boost MIA’s capacity to handle 77 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo by 2040. It includes construction of aircraft aprons, a jet fuel hydrant system, two new baggage carousels, and upgrades linking the Central and South Terminals, targeting LEED Silver certification for sustainability.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava emphasized the significance of this project, noting it will increase capacity, generate thousands of jobs, and solidify MIA’s position as a premier global gateway.

With 56 million passengers and over 3 million tons of freight in 2024, the airport’s demand for space and efficiency continues to rise. Construction is set to start after a ceremonial groundbreaking this summer and is expected to be completed by Spring 2029. The Lemartec-NV2A Joint Venture will serve as general contractor, with Perez & Perez Architects Planners as lead architect.
