Nigeria to Compile Gross Domestic Product Data for All States, Says NBS Chief

The Statistician-General of the Federation and CEO of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, announced a landmark initiative to produce official Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data for each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The announcement was made during his keynote address at the National Consultative Committee of Statistics’ first bi-annual meeting in Katsina State.

Adeniran highlighted the current absence of official state-level GDP figures and committed to supporting every state in compiling these within two months. The initiative aligns with the meeting’s theme: ‘Promoting Development at the Sub-national Level Through Improved State GDP Compilation’.

The effort leverages data from the recent national GDP rebasing exercise, supplemented by state-level surveys and administrative sources. Adeniran stressed the importance of state ownership in the process to ensure data usability for development planning and investment decisions.

Katsina State Governor Mallam Dikko Umar Radda, represented by Deputy Mallam Faruk Lawal Jobe, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing hospitality and tourism as key drivers of sub-national economic growth. He noted the administration’s focus on pro-poor, inclusive growth reflecting the local economy’s dynamic structure.
