Undersea 6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Crete on The Island, No Major Damage Reported as Ships Sail

An undersea earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the Greek island of Crete early Thursday. The quake occurred 55 kilometers north of Crete at a depth of 37 kilometers beneath the seabed and was felt widely across the Aegean Sea. Despite the quake’s strength, there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

In the Cretan port city of Iraklio, a central road was cordoned off after plaster fell from an abandoned building. Civil Protection Minister Ioannis Kefalogiannis noted that the earthquake’s significant depth helped minimize damage. Rescue teams were deployed to the island as a precaution.

Greece is located on major fault lines and frequently experiences seismic activity, though deeper quakes tend to cause less surface damage.
