Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Makes History as NBA MVP, Cements Canadian Basketball Legacy

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player, becoming the first guard to win the award since 2018 and just the second Canadian ever after Steve Nash. The Oklahoma City Thunder star led his team to the best record in the league and posted historic numbers, including a league-best 32.7 points per game, 6.4 assists, and five rebounds.

This marks the seventh consecutive year an international player has won MVP, extending a record streak. The 26-year-old from Hamilton, Ontario, now leads a new generation of Canadian basketball stars, with leaders like Rowan Barrett and former Raptor Jerome “Junkyard Dog” Williams praising the impact of his win.

Gilgeous-Alexander edged out Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic in a close vote, securing 71 first-place ballots to Jokic’s 29. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo finished third. Despite Jokic’s historic triple-double season, SGA’s leadership and dominant performance carried the Thunder to a 68-14 record and a record-setting +12.9 scoring margin.

SGA credited his personal growth off the court as key to his rise and celebrated his teammates’ support, promising them luxury watches for their role in his success.

This MVP win fuels Canada’s basketball momentum as Gilgeous-Alexander joins the elite ranks, turning a childhood dream into reality and inspiring future generations from coast to coast.
