Thousands were evacuated on Saturday as torrential rains triggered severe flooding across northern Buenos Aires province, Argentina’s key agricultural region. The National Meteorological Service issued a red alert Friday, reporting rainfall between 150 and 250mm between Zarate and Arrecifes, with more storms expected.
Television footage showed residents navigating submerged streets in boats in Zarate, 100 km from Buenos Aires. A bus carrying 44 passengers was stranded on Route 9 after water flooded the vehicle.
San Antonio de Areco recorded over 260mm of rain in 24 hours, described by Mayor Francisco Ratto as an exceptionally rare event.
The deluge is expected to delay Argentina’s critical soybean harvest. The country is the world’s top exporter of soybean meal and oil, third in corn exports, and a major wheat exporter.
