Mexican Navy Training Ship Crashes Into Brooklyn Bridge, Killing Two Crew Members

A Mexican navy sailing ship on a global goodwill tour struck New York’s Brooklyn Bridge Saturday night, snapping its three masts and fatally injuring two crew members. At least 19 people required medical treatment after the collision, with four seriously injured, New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed.

The incident occurred as the Cuauhtémoc, an academy training vessel flying the Mexican flag, sailed through the East River. The ship’s mast brushed the 142-year-old bridge, causing the masts to break and some sailors to dangle from harnesses before rescue.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum extended condolences to the families of the victims. The Mexican navy reported that the damaged ship cannot continue its voyage and pledged transparency and commitment to crew safety.

Traffic on the iconic bridge was temporarily halted but later resumed following inspections. The Cuauhtémoc, launched in 1982, was on a 254-day global tour visiting 22 ports in 15 countries, including New York.
