The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, has successfully rescued five individuals who were abducted by armed kidnappers in a recent operation across the state. The victims were freed during a coordinated mission led by the local security corps, which has become a key player in combating insecurity across the South West region of Nigeria.
According to the Commander of Amotekun Corps in Ondo State, Adetunji Adeleye, the kidnapped individuals were rescued from different locations following credible intelligence and swift tactical deployment by operatives. He disclosed that the victims were abducted by suspected herdsmen along the Owo-Ifon axis and were being held in a forest before the intervention.
“Our operatives swung into action immediately after receiving reports of the abduction. We combed the forest areas for several hours before locating and rescuing the victims unharmed,” Adeleye stated during a press briefing in Akure, the state capital. He added that no ransom was paid, and the victims have since been reunited with their families.
The successful rescue has drawn commendations from residents and community leaders, who praised Amotekun’s quick response and continuous efforts in maintaining safety across rural and semi-urban areas of the state. Security analysts have also noted the increasing effectiveness of the corps, especially in areas where conventional security forces face logistical limitations.
Amotekun, established in 2020 by the South West Governors under the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), has played a pivotal role in addressing region-specific security threats including kidnapping, armed robbery, and illegal land encroachments. The corps operates in synergy with the Nigeria Police, local vigilantes, and other law enforcement agencies.
This latest rescue operation comes amid growing concerns about the rising rate of abductions in Nigeria, particularly in highways, forests, and border communities. Ondo State, while relatively more stable than some northern regions, has witnessed sporadic incidents of kidnapping and armed attacks in recent months.
Commander Adeleye reiterated the corps’ commitment to protecting lives and property and warned criminal elements to steer clear of the state. “We are fully on the ground and will continue to respond promptly to any threats to security. The safety of our people remains our top priority,” he declared.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with widespread insecurity, the Amotekun Corps remains a symbol of community-based policing tailored to regional realities. Their successful operations, such as this most recent rescue in Ondo, reflect the growing importance of localized security strategies in the national fight against crime.
