PWHL Expansion Draft Looms as Vancouver and Seattle Prepare to Build Competitive Teams

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is gearing up for an exciting new chapter as expansion teams in Vancouver and Seattle begin to form their rosters ahead of the 2024-25 season. The teams will select players at the entry draft on June 24 in Ottawa and participate in an expansion draft prior to this event, though many details about the process remain unclear.

The expansion draft could see key players from the existing six teams exposed, creating uncertainty for those under contract next season, particularly for players like New York Sirens captain Micah Zandee-Hart, who has been receiving inquiries from teammates eager to learn more. As the PWHL grows its footprint, it aims for both Seattle and Vancouver to be competitive in their first season, reflecting the league’s commitment to increasing viewership and developing women’s hockey talent.

The expansion also creates at least 46 new jobs, providing opportunities for players who have previously had to seek playing time overseas or were on reserve lists. Zandee-Hart, from British Columbia, is excited about the impact a team in her home province will have on the local women’s hockey scene. However, the league’s roster-building process remains uncertain, with general managers, such as Boston Fleet’s Danielle Marmer, still awaiting clarification on how the expansion will affect their teams.
