Saskatchewan has issued a sweeping fire ban across its boreal forest region, from just north of Prince Albert to the Churchill River, due to extreme wildfire danger. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) announced the ban Thursday, citing high fire activity and risk.
The restrictions apply to open fires, controlled burns, and fireworks, even within provincial parks and recreation areas. SPSA operations VP Steve Roberts emphasized the move is essential to protect lives, communities, and infrastructure.
The agency attributes the majority of current wildfires to human activity, often sparked near roads and communities. Officials urge caution, advising residents to avoid driving on dry grass, fully extinguish campfires, and educate children about fire safety.
As of Friday morning, Saskatchewan reported 24 active wildfires, with nine uncontained and expected to expand.
