South Sudan Clashes Leave About 70 Dead as Rival Communities Fight in Rumbek

Violent clashes between rival armed groups in central South Sudan have left approximately 70 people dead and more than 50 others injured, overwhelming a local hospital and forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes.

The fighting erupted on Friday, October 9, 2026, in the Rumbek area of Lakes State, where armed youths from the Pakam and Nyang communities clashed. South Sudan’s Information Ministry said the reported death toll included four soldiers, although authorities stressed that the exact number of fatalities had yet to be independently verified.

Rumbek State Hospital struggled to cope with the influx of injured people following the violence. Teran Madit, a clinical officer at the facility, told The Associated Press that more than 50 people with gunshot wounds had arrived for treatment, many suffering from chest injuries.

Medical staff worked under pressure to treat patients as insecurity spread through the area. Some injured people reportedly left the hospital amid fears that violence could reach the medical facility.

Daniel Laat Kon, head of the Lakes State branch of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, said thousands of residents fled when gunfire erupted early Friday.

He said government security forces attempted to contain the fighting but were outnumbered by the armed youths. Kon also reported that some soldiers were killed while trying to repel the attackers.

Cattle Disputes and Revenge Attacks Fuel Tensions

The clashes involved armed youths from the Pakam community in Rumbek North County and the Nyang community in Rumbek Central County. Both communities belong to South Sudan’s Dinka ethnic group.

Longstanding disputes over cattle, grazing land and revenge killings have contributed to repeated outbreaks of violence in Lakes State. However, authorities have not established the immediate trigger for Friday’s clashes.

Analyst Machot Amuom said unresolved tensions had left the area vulnerable to renewed bloodshed, warning that underlying disputes had not been adequately addressed.

The violence highlights the continuing challenge of preventing intercommunal conflict in South Sudan, where disputes over resources and local rivalries have repeatedly resulted in deadly confrontations.

Security Forces Work to Restore Calm

The government said soldiers and police had regained control of Rumbek following the clashes. Authorities also reported the arrest of four armed civilians and the recovery of four firearms.

United Nations peacekeepers deployed a rapid-response force to help protect the local hospital and humanitarian facilities. Officials urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory attacks that could trigger further violence.

Violence Raises Concerns Ahead of Elections

The bloodshed comes as South Sudan prepares for national elections scheduled for December 22, 2026. President Salva Kiir dissolved the transitional government in September and appointed a caretaker administration, a move that has raised concerns about local governance and security.

Analysts warn that unresolved community disputes and gaps in local leadership could undermine stability ahead of the vote.

As authorities work to restore calm, residents face the challenge of returning home while families mourn those killed and hospitals continue treating the wounded.
