Jenifer Darbellay has been identified as one of the 11 victims killed in the Lapu-Lapu Day festival tragedy in Vancouver. Her husband, Noel Johansen, spoke at a vigil, recalling the moment she died behind him during the attack. Despite his physical injuries, Johansen expressed that the emotional pain of losing his wife was far greater. The couple shared two children, aged seven and 15, and a fundraiser has raised over $130,000 to support the family.
Darbellay was an active community member and co-chair of the Parents Advisory Council at Sir Alexander Mackenzie Elementary School. Fellow PAC member Munisha Tumato described her as a beloved friend, exceptional mother, and a dedicated volunteer. A vigil was held near the crash site, located just blocks from the school, where many in the community had attended the festival.
The attack, which occurred on East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street, left dozens injured. A 30-year-old man has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder in connection with the incident.
