NHL Fines Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals, and Players for Unsportsmanlike Conduct

The NHL has fined both the Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals $25,000 US each for unsportsmanlike conduct during warmups prior to Game 4 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series. The league also announced Monday that players Arber Xhekaj of Montreal and Dylan McIlrath of Washington were each fined the maximum allowable amounts under the collective bargaining agreement: $3,385.42 for Xhekaj and $2,018.23 for McIlrath.

The league did not provide specifics on the nature of the unsportsmanlike conduct, but Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery mentioned after Friday’s Game 3 that both teams had been warned by the NHL about such actions.

This marks the second set of fines in the series. Earlier, Washington’s Tom Wilson and Montreal’s Josh Anderson were each fined $5,000 for their involvement in a bench-clearing altercation during Game 3.

The Capitals won Game 4 5-2, taking a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET in Washington.
