Newly obtained court documents have revealed that Canadian authorities arrested another suspected participant this year in connection with the human-smuggling operation linked to the deaths of an Indian family of four near the Manitoba-U.S. border in 2022.
The documents provide new details about the years-long investigation into the deaths of Jagdish Patel, his wife Vaishali and their two children, Vihangi and Dharmik, whose bodies were found near the U.S. border in January 2022 after they became separated from a larger group of migrants attempting to cross into the United States.
According to an RCMP affidavit, police arrested an unnamed driver in February 2026 who investigators believe helped transport the Patel family and other migrants to Winnipeg before their journey toward the border. Authorities are still determining whether the individual will be treated as a witness or face prosecution in Canada or the United States.
The documents also shed light on why the investigation has taken several years. RCMP officers cited limited resources, competing priorities and staffing challenges within the Manitoba border-related unit. Investigators were also required to handle other human-smuggling cases while pursuing leads connected to the Patel family.
The investigation has involved more than 40 search warrants, covering records such as banking information, phone data, vehicle rentals and email accounts. Much of the information contained in the documents remains redacted because a provincial court judge determined that releasing it could pose a serious risk to the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The documents also contain allegations concerning Fenil Patel, a man accused of involvement in the wider smuggling operation. U.S. authorities reportedly obtained a sealed indictment against him involving six charges. He remains in Canadian custody while his extradition case proceeds.
The Patel family had been travelling through Canada before attempting the dangerous winter crossing. Earlier court documents described extreme conditions, with temperatures feeling below -30 C with wind chill. U.S. authorities also arrested another alleged smuggling participant, Steve Shand, near the border on the same day the family was found dead.
The latest documents indicate that investigators believe there may have been additional unidentified people involved in the operation.
With the investigation still ongoing, authorities continue to examine evidence and determine whether further arrests or prosecutions will follow.
