The opening of the Dangote refinery IPO has made one number impossible to ignore: ₦525 per share. For a retail investor, however, the share price itself says very little about whether an investment is attractive.

1. What am I actually buying?

An investor is buying an equity stake in a refinery business, not a fixed-income product. The return will depend on the company’s future earnings, valuation, dividends if declared and the market price after listing.

2. How does the valuation compare with the business?

The offer values the refinery at tens of trillions of naira. That makes the earnings outlook, refining margins, crude supply and planned expansion central to the investment case.

3. Can expansion targets be delivered?

The refinery is targeting a major increase in capacity. Expansion can create future revenue, but it also requires capital, reliable crude supply, engineering execution and market demand.

4. What are the downside risks?

Investors should consider oil-price volatility, regulation, competition, currency movements, operating interruptions and the possibility that the market assigns a lower valuation after listing.

5. Am I investing or chasing a headline?

The strongest discipline is to treat the IPO like any other investment: read the prospectus, understand the risks and invest only what fits your own financial position.
