The annual Calgary Expo weekend got underway in grand style Friday with the Parade of Wonders, marking the start of Canada’s biggest cosplay event. This year’s parade took a new route, weaving through downtown Calgary and showcasing the creativity and passion of pop culture fans.
The parade began at the Victoria Park Fan Zone at First Street S.W. and 13th Avenue, with participants in everything from elaborate, hand-crafted costumes to simple cardboard creations. The parade made its way south on Centre Street, then east on 17th Avenue S.E, culminating at the BMO Centre’s Grand Staircase at Stampede Park.
Among the stars set to appear at this year’s expo are Michael J. Fox, Nicholas Hoult, David Boreanaz, John Boyega, Dafne Keen, Christopher Lloyd, and many more.
Mayor Jyoti Gondek made her own contribution to the cosplay scene, walking the parade route dressed as Lady Thor, with Loki, the first dog mayor of Calgary, by her side. Gondek joked about delegating some of her duties to Loki, especially ensuring the park was “good for everybody.”
“These costumes are amazing, the city is amazing. I’m just so happy to be here,” said Lucas Grabeel, best known for his role as Ryan Evans in High School Musical, as he marveled at the fantastic costumes.
Adam Savage, former MythBusters co-host, also shared his excitement about the event, expressing his eagerness to meet fans and discuss the process behind their intricate costume designs.
The four-day Calgary Expo continues until Sunday at 5 p.m., offering fans the chance to engage with their favorite stars, explore unique cosplay creations, and celebrate all things pop culture.
