Winnipeg’s New Bike Registry Partnership Shows Strong Results in Stolen Bicycle Recovery
The City of Winnipeg is seeing encouraging progress in the fight against bike theft, thanks to a newly launched partnership with a national bike registry. Officials say the initiative is already producing “very promising” results in recovering stolen bicycles and improving public confidence in bike ownership.
Earlier this year, the City of Winnipeg partnered with the 529 Garage registry, a community-based digital platform that allows cyclists to register their bikes and report thefts in real time. Since the collaboration began, city officials and police have reported a notable uptick in the recovery of stolen bikes, with several already returned to their rightful owners.
“Our partnership with 529 Garage is showing very promising results,” said a spokesperson from the City of Winnipeg. “This initiative not only helps deter theft but also provides our enforcement teams with a tool to return lost or stolen property to residents faster than ever before.”
The 529 Garage platform operates by allowing cyclists to create a digital profile for their bike, complete with serial numbers, distinguishing features, and photos. If a bike is stolen, the owner can flag it in the system, alerting other users and law enforcement officers across the network. This crowdsourced approach has proven effective in various Canadian cities and is now gaining traction in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg has historically struggled with bike theft, with hundreds of cases reported each year. The addition of this new registry system is part of the city’s broader strategy to reduce theft rates and promote sustainable, active transportation. In 2024 alone, city data showed more than 1,000 bikes reported stolen—a number officials are now hoping to drive down significantly.
