Russia Launches Devastating Attack on Kyiv, Escalating Tensions Amid Peace Talks

Russia launched its most significant attack on Kyiv this year, firing missiles and drones overnight, killing at least 12 people and wounding 90 others. The missile strikes caused widespread destruction, setting buildings on fire and burying victims under rubble. Ukrainian rescue teams are still working through debris, more than 12 hours after the attack.

The most severe damage occurred in the Sviatoshynskyi district, where two buildings were destroyed. Ukrainian officials, including Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that rescue teams are continuing their search for survivors. Forty fires were ignited across Kyiv, with mobile phones ringing under the rubble, suggesting that more people may still be trapped.

The attack came amid growing international pressure, particularly from the U.S. as President Donald Trump issued a rare rebuke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on social media, urging him to stop the violence. Trump criticized the timing of the attack, claiming it was detrimental to peace efforts as his administration seeks to mediate a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

In addition to Kyiv, other regions of Ukraine, including Kharkiv and Zhytomyr, also faced heavy Russian missile and drone strikes. The assault disrupted civilian life, damaging residential buildings, industrial sites, and vital infrastructure. Ukrainian forces intercepted a large portion of the missiles, but the destruction was significant.

The attack further complicates the ongoing diplomatic tensions surrounding the Russia-Ukraine war. With the U.S. trying to push for peace, both Kyiv and Moscow remain entrenched in their positions. President Zelenskyy has consistently refused to acknowledge Crimea as part of Russia, a key issue impeding the peace process. As the war enters its third year, Russia’s actions suggest they are not ready to negotiate.
