Nigerian-born law professor Dr. Ibironke Odumosu-Ayanu has been appointed dean of the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, marking a significant achievement in her academic career.
Odumosu-Ayanu will begin her five-year term as dean on October 1, 2026, succeeding Martin Phillipson, who completed two five-year terms in the position. The University of Saskatchewan announced the appointment on September 1.
The appointment recognizes Odumosu-Ayanu’s extensive experience in legal education, research and academic leadership. She currently serves as the college’s associate dean of research and graduate studies and has been a member of the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Law since 2008.
Interim Provost and Vice-President, Academic, Patti McDougall, who chaired the search committee, praised Odumosu-Ayanu’s record of academic excellence and collaborative leadership.
The university said her leadership is expected to build on the College of Law’s reputation for legal education and research while strengthening its work in Indigenous legal scholarship and engagement with local and international communities.
From Lagos to Canadian Academia
Odumosu-Ayanu grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, where she developed an early interest in reading and writing. Although she initially considered studying communications, encouragement from her teachers and support from her parents eventually led her to pursue a career in law.
She studied law at the University of Lagos, earning her Bachelor of Laws degree before moving to Canada for postgraduate studies. She completed a master’s degree at the University of Calgary, attracted by the institution’s research strengths in natural resources, energy and environmental law.
After completing her PhD, Odumosu-Ayanu turned her attention toward academia. She eventually moved to Saskatchewan in 2008 to join the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Law, where she has built a career spanning teaching, research and academic administration.
Her new position places her at the helm of one of the university’s key academic institutions and represents another milestone in the growing presence of Nigerian scholars in Canadian higher education.
The appointment has also attracted attention in Nigeria, particularly among Nigerians in the diaspora, as Odumosu-Ayanu’s journey from Lagos to senior academic leadership in Canada highlights the international impact of Nigerian-trained professionals.
As she prepares to assume the deanship in October, Odumosu-Ayanu will be tasked with providing strategic leadership for the College of Law while advancing its educational, research and community-engagement priorities.
