Jordan’s U.S. Alliance Makes Kingdom a Target for Repeated Iranian Strikes

Jordan’s close military and security alliance with the United States has increasingly exposed the kingdom to Iranian missile and drone attacks, putting one of Washington’s most important Middle Eastern partners under growing pressure.

Jordan hosts U.S. military personnel and facilities that have supported American operations in the region. That presence has made some sites in the kingdom targets as Iran retaliates against U.S. forces during the escalating conflict.

The latest escalation followed U.S. strikes against Iranian military targets on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with ballistic missile attacks aimed at U.S. forces in Jordan and other American-linked facilities in the region. U.S. officials said American defenses intercepted the missiles targeting its personnel.

Jordan’s strategic importance to Washington goes beyond its military facilities. The kingdom has spent decades strengthening security cooperation with the United States and cultivating close relationships with Western governments as it navigates instability across the Middle East.

Jordanian officials have continued to defend the country’s foreign policy and security partnerships despite the risks. The government views cooperation with Washington as important to protecting the kingdom from regional threats, including Iran-backed armed groups and other security challenges.

The attacks have created a difficult balancing act for Amman. Jordan has sought to avoid becoming directly involved in regional conflicts while simultaneously maintaining its longstanding alliance with Washington.

Jordan has also previously reported intercepting Iranian missiles and drones. A March submission to the United Nations said more than 100 drones and over 100 ballistic and cruise missiles had targeted Jordanian territory since the attacks began, causing injuries and property damage.

The security pressure comes as Jordan faces significant domestic challenges, including economic difficulties, inflation and the strain of hosting millions of refugees. Regional instability, particularly violence in the neighboring West Bank, adds another layer of pressure on the government.

For Washington, Jordan remains a key strategic partner and an important location for U.S. military operations in the Middle East. For Amman, however, the alliance increasingly carries security risks as Iranian attacks place the kingdom directly in the line of fire.

The continuing strikes demonstrate how the wider U.S.-Iran conflict is affecting countries that host American forces, raising concerns that the confrontation could further destabilize an already volatile Middle East.
