Keystone Pipeline Resumes Operations After North Dakota Spill

South Bow has restarted the Keystone oil pipeline following a shutdown caused by a spill in North Dakota last week. The company confirmed the system is now operational under reduced pressure and round-the-clock monitoring, in line with federal safety requirements. The compromised section was excavated, replaced, and will undergo metallurgical testing in Houston to determine the cause, which remains unknown.

The April 8 spill near Fort Ransom released an estimated 3,500 barrels of crude oil, with cleanup crews recovering about a third of the total volume by Friday. South Bow has completed site repairs and inspections, receiving approval from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to proceed. The company also imposed pressure limits on the pipeline’s Canadian segment and has shared details with Canadian regulators.

The Keystone Pipeline, stretching over 2,600 miles, transports crude from Alberta to refineries in the U.S. Midwest and Gulf Coast. The affected section had been closed from Alberta to Oklahoma, while the southern leg continued operations. Despite the incident, falling oil prices driven by tariff concerns have minimized the impact on gas prices, though diesel rates may still rise slightly.
