Toronto Woman Alarmed After Ride-Share Chat Transcribed Without Consent in Lyft Privacy Breach

A Toronto woman was left unsettled after discovering that her private conversation during a Lyft ride was recorded and transcribed without her consent. Anvi Ahuja received a “freaky” text with a transcript of an eight-minute conversation she had with her roommates, prompting concerns about surveillance and privacy. Lyft initially suggested the recording was part of a pilot program but later blamed the driver, saying “proper actions” were taken. Ahuja was never informed about any recording, and the transcript appears to have been sent from a masked number via Lyft’s third-party provider. Experts say the incident breaches Canada’s federal privacy laws, which require informed consent under PIPEDA. Lyft maintains the incident was not linked to any official pilot program and emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for privacy violations.
