A Palestinian journalist was killed on Monday, and nine others were wounded, some critically, when an Israeli airstrike hit a media tent in southern Gaza, according to local medics and the journalists’ union. The attack occurred in the early hours of the morning at the Nasser Hospital compound in Khan Younis, as footage verified by Reuters showed attempts to extinguish flames engulfing the tent. Unverified social media footage later showed the tent reduced to ashes, with images of a journalist in flames and a rescue attempt circulating widely.
Israeli authorities have not yet responded to requests for comment on the attack. The deceased journalist, Helmi al-Faqawi, was laid to rest later in a funeral attended by colleagues and family members. Fellow journalist Abd Shaat emphasized that they would continue their mission to convey the truth despite the dangers.
Faqawi’s death brings the number of journalists killed in Gaza since October 2023 to more than 210, according to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the killing as an “extra-judicial killing” intended to intimidate reporters and halt media coverage. On the same day, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 20 Palestinians across Gaza.
