Severe Flooding and Storms Continue to Devastate South and Midwest, Leaving Multiple Fatalities in Their Wake

A new wave of torrential rain and flash flooding hit parts of the South and Midwest on Saturday, exacerbating already dire conditions in regions drenched by days of severe storms and deadly tornadoes. Forecasters warn that rivers will continue rising, with extensive flooding likely to affect critical infrastructure, including roads and bridges.

At least 16 weather-related fatalities have been reported, including a 57-year-old man in Missouri, two victims in Kentucky—one a 9-year-old swept away while heading to school, and a 74-year-old found dead in a submerged car—and a 5-year-old in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Tornadoes earlier this week destroyed neighborhoods, contributing to at least seven of the deaths. The flooding is disrupting commerce, particularly in shipping hubs like Louisville and Memphis, causing potential delays in supply chains.

The Ohio River in Louisville has risen 5 feet in just 24 hours, with expectations of continued swelling. Flash flood and tornado warnings remain in effect across several states, with numerous roads impassable due to flooding, downed trees, and mudslides.

The violent weather is attributed to a combination of warm temperatures, unstable atmospheric conditions, and abundant moisture from the Gulf, with more than a foot of rain recorded in parts of Kentucky since Wednesday. Emergency officials urge people to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
