Ottawa Charge Surge Into Playoff Spot Ahead of PWHL Break

A week after a crushing loss to the New York Sirens, the Ottawa Charge have turned their season around with back-to-back regulation wins over the Boston Fleet. Rookie goaltender Gwyneth Philips rebounded in a big way, conceding just one goal across both victories.

Wednesday’s 4-0 win not only secured Ottawa’s fourth-place position heading into the international break but also showcased the team’s newfound resilience. Head coach Carla MacLeod praised the effort, urging her squad to carry the momentum forward when play resumes on April 26.

With only three regular-season games remaining, the PWHL playoff race is tightening. While Montreal has clinched a spot, all other teams remain in contention, though New York faces an uphill battle from last place.

Key trade acquisitions Tereza Vanišová and Shiann Darkangelo have proven their worth for Ottawa, with Darkangelo’s hat trick against Boston solidifying the Charge’s push. Meanwhile, the Toronto Sceptres continue their surge behind standout defender Renata Fast, who has bolstered the league’s most potent power play.

For Montreal, securing a playoff berth hasn’t erased concerns over offensive struggles, with head coach Kori Cheverie demanding more scoring depth. Goaltender Elaine Chuli has been a bright spot in Ann-Renée Desbiens’ absence, giving the Victoire stability in net.

The PWHL resumes April 26, kicking off a dramatic sprint to the Walter Cup playoffs.
