Adm. Brad Cooper, the top U.S. military commander in the Middle East, has visited the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea as Washington’s military campaign against Iran continues and tensions remain high across the region.
Cooper’s visit came at the end of a 10-day regional tour that also took him to Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where he met with civilian and military officials.
The USS Lincoln has been deployed in the Middle East since January and has supported U.S. military operations against Iran, including a blockade of Iranian ports. The aircraft carrier has spent more than 240 consecutive days at sea, raising concerns about the effects of prolonged deployment on service members and the ship’s supplies and operations.
The visit comes as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remain stalled, while discussions involving Oman focus partly on the future of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial international shipping route for global energy supplies.
Israel Strikes Hezbollah Targets in Southern Lebanon
Elsewhere in the region, Israel carried out strikes in southern Lebanon that killed at least 11 people, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state news agency.
Israel said the attacks targeted two Hezbollah commanders and described the strikes as the deadliest violence since a truce between Israel and the Iran-backed group took effect in June.
Hamas Delegation Holds Gaza Ceasefire Talks in Cairo
A Hamas delegation led by senior leader Khalil al-Hayya is also in Cairo for discussions with Egyptian officials over efforts to advance a Gaza ceasefire.
The talks are focused on a broader roadmap involving the disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups, the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the transfer of authority in Gaza to Palestinian technocrats.
Meanwhile, tensions involving Iran and other regional countries remain high, with Tehran accusing Qatar of holding three Iranian pilots whose aircraft were reportedly downed in March. Qatar has denied the allegation and said its search-and-rescue teams recovered the remains of one pilot.
The developments underline the complexity of the Middle East crisis, with military operations, ceasefire negotiations and diplomatic efforts continuing simultaneously across several fronts.
