Nissan’s incoming CEO, Ivan Espinosa, is set to drive major changes at the struggling Japanese automaker, vowing to accelerate decision-making and develop models that truly embody the Nissan brand. The 46-year-old Mexican executive, with two decades of experience at the company, emphasized the need for a more cohesive corporate culture, stressing teamwork and agility in product development.
Espinosa, who takes over from Makoto Uchida on April 1, inherits a company still grappling with financial difficulties and the legacy of former chairman Carlos Ghosn’s scandal. He plans to cut vehicle development time to as little as 30 months and focus on high-volume, brand-defining models, including electric vehicles and self-driving technology.
While open to industry partnerships, Espinosa ruled out immediate tie-ups, following Nissan’s recent decision to end merger talks with Honda. Analysts remain cautious about his appointment, noting that the company’s future hinges on the effectiveness of his leadership strategy.
