Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Surpasses 2,000 Cases as Health Workers Expand Strike Action

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 2,000 confirmed infections, with 754 deaths recorded, as more healthcare workers have joined an expanding strike over unpaid wages and deteriorating working conditions. The crisis is now being described by health officials as the country’s fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record.

According to the latest figures released by Congo’s Ministry of Health, the country has reported 2,011 confirmed Ebola cases, including 754 fatalities, while hundreds of patients remain in treatment or isolation facilities. Health authorities have also confirmed that more than 360 people have recovered from the disease.

The outbreak is being driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no licensed vaccine or approved treatment, making containment efforts significantly more difficult. Health experts say the virus continues to spread rapidly across affected communities, particularly in Ituri Province, the epicentre of the outbreak.

Compounding the public health emergency, additional healthcare workers have gone on strike, demanding payment of overdue salaries and improved working conditions after months of responding to the deadly outbreak. Medical personnel argue they have continued treating patients under dangerous conditions without receiving adequate compensation.

The strike has raised concerns that medical services and disease surveillance efforts could be further disrupted as authorities struggle to contain the epidemic. Contact tracing remains one of the biggest challenges, with officials reporting that only about 67% of identified contacts are currently being monitored. Additionally, roughly 80% of new infections are emerging from unknown transmission chains, making it increasingly difficult to stop the spread of the virus.

The World Health Organization and humanitarian organizations continue supporting response efforts through expanded treatment centres, laboratory testing, surveillance, and clinical trials of experimental therapies. However, insecurity, population displacement, community mistrust, and limited healthcare access continue to hamper containment operations.

International health officials have warned that without stronger support for healthcare workers and expanded outbreak response measures, the epidemic could continue growing and place additional pressure on neighbouring countries.

Authorities are urging residents to report suspected cases promptly, cooperate with contact tracers, and follow public health guidance as emergency response teams work to slow the spread of the disease.
