After nearly a month of uncertainty, some travelers who found their vehicles trapped in a partially collapsed Ottawa parking garage have finally been reunited with them.
The ordeal began on Feb. 26 when a damaged column inside the Indigo parkade on Slater Street led to a partial collapse, cutting off access to about 50 cars. While no injuries were reported, owners faced weeks of waiting as structural concerns delayed retrieval efforts.
Among them was Mae Whalen, a visitor from Kingston, Ont., who had parked in the garage while attending a conference. Returning to find emergency crews surrounding the building, she spent weeks wondering if her Chevy Volt had been damaged. On Friday, she finally retrieved it—dusty but intact, along with her husband’s prized Stetson hat.
Another car owner, Pamela Warburton, expressed frustration over the slow communication but was relieved when her vehicle was towed to her dealership in Sherbrooke, Que. “I finally feel like I can take a deep breath,” she said.
While cars on the first three levels have been removed, vehicles on floors four through seven remain trapped. Canada Life, the company that owns the garage, said the next phase will involve constructing temporary ramps to free the remaining cars, a process that could take more than a week.
