Environment Canada Warns of Prolonged Heat Wave Across Southern Manitoba

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a warning that a prolonged period of hot weather is expected to affect Southern Manitoba, with residents advised to prepare for several consecutive days of elevated temperatures.

Forecasters say daytime temperatures are expected to remain well above seasonal averages, while overnight temperatures may offer little relief, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable individuals.

The extended heat is expected to impact several communities across southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, where residents are being encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.

Environment Canada noted that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and other serious health complications, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and outdoor workers.

Health officials recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight clothing, checking on family members and neighbours, and never leaving children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles.

Residents are also encouraged to monitor weather updates and any heat warnings that may be issued as conditions evolve throughout the week.

Municipal authorities and emergency services are expected to closely monitor the situation, with cooling centres and public facilities potentially available for those seeking relief from the extreme temperatures.

Meteorologists said the heat wave is part of a broader pattern of unusually warm weather affecting parts of central Canada during the summer season.

The extended period of high temperatures may also increase wildfire risks in some areas, prompting officials to remind residents to exercise caution with outdoor fires and activities that could ignite dry vegetation.

Environment Canada will continue monitoring weather conditions and provide updated forecasts as the prolonged heat event develops.

Residents across southern Manitoba are urged to take precautions to protect themselves, their families, and pets until temperatures begin returning to more seasonal levels.
