Thomas Bach Reflects on IOC Tenure Ahead of Presidential Election

As he nears the end of his tenure, IOC President Thomas Bach expressed confidence in his legacy, stating he is leaving with a “clear conscience.” Since 2013, Bach has navigated major challenges, including a global pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, and the Russian doping scandal. Despite criticism over allowing Russian athletes to compete under neutral status, he secured a $3 billion NBC media rights deal and oversaw the successful Paris Olympics.

The next IOC president, to be elected Thursday, will face key issues, including climate change and political tensions, particularly with the U.S. as Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Games. Bach emphasized the importance of neutrality in sports, addressing the controversy surrounding transgender athletes and reiterating the IOC’s stance against discrimination.

With seven candidates on the ballot, including frontrunners Sebastian Coe, Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., and Kirsty Coventry, the vote will take place behind closed doors. The winner will be announced once a majority is secured.
