The Canadian short track speed skating team delivered an outstanding performance at the World Championships in Beijing, securing three gold medals and a silver on Saturday.
The women’s relay team, featuring Courtney Sarault (Moncton, N.B.), Rikki Doak (Fredericton), Florence Brunelle (Trois-Rivières, Que.), and Kim Boutin (Sherbrooke, Que.), claimed gold in the 3,000m final with a time of 4:09.254, narrowly edging out Poland (4:09.321) and the Netherlands (4:09.392).
Montreal’s Will Dandjinou triumphed in the men’s 1,500m final, clocking 2:15.064 to secure gold ahead of Belgium’s Stijn Desmet (2:15.176) and China’s Liu Shaoang (2:15.871). Dandjinou expressed his excitement, calling it his best 1,500m race of the season and highlighting the team’s growing momentum.
Steven Dubois of Terrebonne, Que., clinched gold in the men’s 500m final, completing the race in 40.008 seconds. He outpaced Denis Nikisha of Kazakhstan (40.096) and Jens van’T Wout of the Netherlands (40.163). Dubois, who had previously won silver and bronze at the World Championships, celebrated his first individual gold, calling it the missing piece in his career.
Courtney Sarault added an individual silver in the women’s 1,000m final, finishing in 1:28.929, just behind Belgium’s Hanne Desmet (1:28.641) and ahead of Dutch skater Xandra Velzeboer (1:28.991). Sarault noted her growing confidence and fitness, emphasizing her steady progress throughout the season.
