England captain Harry Kane matched a historic national record by scoring twice in a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia on Wednesday, drawing level with Gary Lineker as England’s all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
The win at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, saw Kane take his World Cup tally to 10 goals, equaling the mark set by Lineker during the 1986 and 1990 tournaments. The Bayern Munich striker also extended his overall international goal count to 81, further cementing his status as one of England’s greatest players.
Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a video review ruled that Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic had moved off his line before saving the initial attempt. The England captain made no mistake with the retake, calmly converting to give his side the lead.
Croatia responded through Martin Baturina, who beat Jordan Pickford with a well-placed effort, before Kane restored England’s advantage with a powerful header from a Declan Rice corner. However, Croatia struck again just before halftime when Petar Musa finished from close range to make it 2-2.
England regained control almost immediately after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Jude Bellingham raced onto a long pass and fired a shot beyond Livakovic, with the ball clipping the far post on its way into the net.
The goal shifted momentum firmly in England’s favor as the Three Lions continued to create chances. Livakovic produced several important saves to keep Croatia in the contest, but Marcus Rashford sealed the victory in the 85th minute with England’s fourth goal of the evening.
The penalty that led to Kane’s first goal came after veteran Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, making a record fifth World Cup appearance for his country at age 40, fouled Noni Madueke inside the area.
Croatia’s second goal carried special significance for Musa, who currently plays for Major League Soccer side FC Dallas, whose home stadium is located near the World Cup venue in Arlington.
The match was played under the closed roof of the Dallas Cowboys’ home stadium, providing relief from the intense Texas heat for thousands of England and Croatia supporters.
With the victory, England takes an important step forward in Group L and will next face Ghana in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Croatia will look to bounce back when it takes on Panama in Toronto.
Kane’s achievement places him alongside Lineker in the World Cup record books and puts him one goal away from becoming England’s outright leading scorer in the tournament’s history.
