Canada and Greece have formalized their commitment to boosting tourism cooperation through a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Athens.
Greece’s Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, and Canada’s Ambassador to Greece, Karine Asselin, signed the agreement, which emphasizes institutional collaboration, data sharing, and sustainable tourism development. The initiative aims to enhance travel opportunities while promoting climate action and economic sustainability.
“This MOU with Greece will strengthen bilateral trade ties with an important European partner and will serve to open up new opportunities for both countries in the tourism sector. By working together, we’re making it easier for Canadians and Greeks to explore and enjoy each other’s countries while supporting economic prosperity for both,” said Mary Ng, Canada’s Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development.
Greece remains a top European destination for Canadian travelers, with UN Tourism data showing a steady influx of visitors. In 2023, Greek tourists contributed approximately $6.9 million to the Canadian economy, marking a $2.1 million increase from the previous year. With nearly 300,000 Canadians of Greek descent and a significant Canadian presence in Greece, the agreement aims to foster deeper cultural and economic connections.
This partnership follows Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s 2024 visit to Canada, reinforcing bilateral cooperation. Canadian officials anticipate the strengthened relationship will showcase Canada’s tourism sector to a broader international audience, benefiting local communities across the country.
