Donatella Versace has stepped down as creative director of the iconic fashion house founded by her late brother, Gianni Versace. She will transition into the role of chief brand ambassador, according to an announcement from Versace’s U.S. owner, Capri Holdings, on Thursday.
Dario Vitale, previously the design director at Miu Miu under the Prada Group, will assume the role of creative director effective April 1. His appointment fuels speculation that Prada Group may be in talks to acquire Versace from Capri Holdings, which purchased the brand in 2018 for €2 billion ($2.2 billion). Capri Holdings also owns Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo.
Miuccia Prada recently acknowledged interest in Versace during Milan Fashion Week, while Donatella Versace, 69, remained silent at what was expected to be her final runway show. She took over creative leadership in 1997 following her brother’s murder in Miami.
Capri Holdings did not comment on any potential sale but emphasized that the creative shift aligns with a strategic succession plan. Versace CEO John D. Idol praised Vitale as a strong leader whose vision will drive the brand’s future growth.
In her new role, Donatella Versace expressed excitement about Vitale’s appointment and reaffirmed her lifelong commitment to the brand. She described it as an honor to carry on her brother’s legacy and vowed to remain Versace’s most passionate supporter.
Versace represented 20% of Capri Holdings’ €5.2 billion revenue in 2024. The company recently outlined plans to restore the brand’s bold identity, expand its accessories segment, and attract younger consumers following a shift toward high-net-worth clientele after the pandemic.
