EPA Administrator Zeldin Announces Sweeping Deregulatory Actions Targeting Clean Air and Water Regulations

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin unveiled 31 deregulatory measures aimed at reducing regulatory burdens on industries, arguing they will boost economic growth by rolling back environmental protections. Among the most significant changes, Zeldin announced a reconsideration of power plant emissions standards, which the Biden administration had tightened to curb greenhouse gases. The EPA will also review toxic emissions limits for coal plants, wastewater regulations for power facilities, and new uses for oil and gas wastewater.

Additionally, Zeldin’s EPA will reconsider vehicle emissions standards, which have been a cornerstone of the Biden administration’s climate policies, and reassess the 2009 Endangerment Finding, which classified greenhouse gases as a threat to public health. Other key rollbacks include modifications to emergency planning for petrochemical facilities, the restructuring of the Regional Haze Program, and an overhaul of the Social Cost of Carbon metric, which estimates the economic damage of carbon emissions.

Environmental groups and public health advocates warn that these changes could lead to increased air and water pollution, higher health risks, and long-term climate consequences. However, Zeldin argues that the Biden administration’s policies have placed undue restrictions on businesses and energy production, driving up costs for consumers. The agency will also review national emission standards for air pollutants, particulate matter regulations, and coal ash program oversight.

The EPA’s moves mark a significant shift in environmental policy, prioritizing industry flexibility over stringent environmental protections. With legal challenges expected from states and environmental organizations, the long-term impact of these deregulations remains uncertain.
