Federal Authorities Probe Giant ‘8647’ Markings on National Mall Amid Political Controversy

Federal authorities have launched an investigation after giant “8647” markings appeared on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., sparking political backlash from the White House and renewed debate over free speech and political expression.

The markings were discovered Thursday on the iconic lawn near several major federal landmarks, prompting a response from the U.S. Park Police and the Department of the Interior. Officials collected grass samples and began examining the site to determine how the numbers were created and whether any laws were violated.

An Interior Department spokesperson condemned the incident, describing it as vandalism and emphasizing that any perceived threat against President Donald Trump would be taken seriously.

“The Department and U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable,” the spokesperson said.

The sequence “8647” has become politically charged in recent months because of its connection to a high-profile criminal case involving former FBI Director James Comey. Prosecutors previously argued that a social media post featuring the numbers could be interpreted as a threat against Trump, who has served as both the 45th and 47th President of the United States.

However, a federal judge recently ruled in a separate case that the numbers alone do not constitute a threat. The court determined that a protest flag displaying “8647” outside a federal courthouse was protected under free speech rights and did not need to be removed.

The meaning of “86” has been widely debated. In restaurant terminology, the phrase traditionally refers to removing an item from service or indicating that something is unavailable. Political interpretations of the number combination have since fueled controversy and legal scrutiny.

White House officials reacted strongly to the markings. Spokesperson Davis Ingle described any endorsement of political violence as unacceptable and called for strong condemnation of rhetoric perceived as threatening toward the president.

Authorities have not announced any suspects, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia declined to comment on whether any potential criminal charges could result from the investigation.

The incident comes at a sensitive time, just days before major public events planned in Washington, including celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States and sporting events scheduled near the White House grounds.

Investigators continue to examine the site while officials work to determine the origin and intent behind the markings. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
