NiDCOM Launches 2025 Diaspora Data Mapping to Boost Engagement and Voting Rights

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has reinforced the importance of data mapping in enhancing its engagement with Nigerians abroad. Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa emphasized this during the launch of NiDCOM’s 2025 Comprehensive Data Mapping initiative for Nigerians in the Euroasia region in Abuja.

In a statement signed by Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM’s Protocol Unit, Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians in Euroasia to register on the Commission’s Data Mapping Portal, describing it as a crucial step toward achieving diaspora voting. She reiterated that allowing Nigerians abroad to participate in elections has been a key priority for NiDCOM, stressing that every Nigerian of voting age should have a voice in the country’s democratic process.

She highlighted that one of the major obstacles to diaspora voting is the absence of credible data on Nigerians living overseas. Encouraging registration on the portal, she underscored its significance in creating an accurate and updated database of the Nigerian diaspora.

Dabiri-Erewa also commended the Council of Nigerian Association Presidents in Australia for fostering partnerships beneficial to both Nigeria and host countries. Expressing enthusiasm about attending upcoming diaspora events in Euroasia, she urged Nigerians there to showcase their achievements and pursue nominations for the National Diaspora Merit Awards.

She reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to collaborating with the diaspora, particularly in Euroasia, and lauded the Commission’s Technology Transfer and Innovation Department for advancing innovative solutions for diaspora engagement.

Ambassador Jane Adams, the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Australia, described the data mapping initiative as both timely and essential. She assured that the Mission is working with relevant agencies to ensure that Nigerians abroad are treated with dignity, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Adams also commended Dabiri-Erewa’s leadership and pledged full support for NiDCOM’s initiatives.

Abdulrahman Terab, Head of NiDCOM’s TTI Department, presented the user-friendly portal, explaining that the data gathered would offer vital statistics and customized solutions for Nigerians overseas. He assured users that the portal adheres to Nigeria’s Data Protection Regulation and employs advanced encryption to safeguard privacy and prevent breaches.

Launched in 2021, the Diaspora Data-Mapping Portal aims to collect detailed demographic data on Nigerians abroad to enhance diaspora engagement and facilitate services such as Diaspora Mortgage Schemes, Diaspora Housing, and other tailored programs.
