Daylight Saving Time 2025: When It Starts, What Changes, and the Ongoing Debate

As warmer days approach and the sun rises earlier, the annual tradition of daylight saving time is set to begin.

Daylight saving time officially starts on Sunday at 2 a.m. local time, when clocks will spring forward one hour to 3 a.m. Most Canadians will observe the time shift, losing an hour of sleep but gaining extended daylight in the evening. The transition back occurs on Sunday, Nov. 2, when clocks will “fall back” one hour at 2 a.m.

The biannual clock change remains a subject of debate, with experts highlighting its effects on sleep, productivity, and health, including links to headaches and heart complications. Politicians have discussed eliminating the switch, but Canada’s decision remains tied to the U.S., making any change complicated.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has previously indicated support for ending daylight saving time, calling it costly and inconvenient. However, his stance has fluctuated. This week, Elon Musk reignited the conversation by polling voters on whether they prefer permanent daylight saving time.

A previous U.S. Senate bill aimed at making daylight saving time permanent stalled in the House, as lawmakers failed to reach a consensus on whether to retain the biannual clock adjustment or abolish it entirely.
